This Hemotoxilin and Eosin (H and E) slide of the colonic mucosa in a patient with UC demonstrates extensive inflammatory cells within the crypts, replenished goblet cells, and epithelial proliferation. Within the mucosa and lamina propria there are lymphocytes and PMNs. This is the cause of the granular appearance seen on air contrast barium enemas in early UC (Figure 7).
