This is a gross colectomy specimen of a patient with ulcerative colitis. The different stages and extent of this pancolitis are nicely demonstrated with areas of red, hemorrhagic, and inflamed mucosa transitioning into areas of extensive ulceration and pseudopolyp formation (these are islands of remaining mucosa surrounded by a sea of ulceration). Colectomy is the treatment of choice for patients with extensive disease (15% to 25% of patients).
