Gross specimen from the patient with the toxic megacolon demonstrates areas of yellow, thin bowel wall (these areas often show ischemia with destruction of the myenteric plexus; they have the texture of "wet tissue paper") side-by-side with areas of hemorrhagic and irregular mucosa.
